One for the photo geeks among us.

Welcome to the family.

Today I gained three items and handed over one.

I now have a Nikon D300 camera which I am already waiting to try out on someone. I may have an interested party tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed. The camera is a big step up from my two D200’s and the preview monitor has to be seen to be believed.

In order to get the following I traded in one of my Nikon D200 cameras. The good news is I got the exact same amount as what I paid for it in August this year.

I got the MB-D10 battery grip for the D300 as without it my cameras feel like toys. By using rechargeable AA lithium batteries (as well as the camera’s internal battery) I can blast away at 8 fames per second.

And finally a new lens joins the others in my bag. The Sigma 10-20 4-5.6 wide angle. This is a great lens and will be used heavily at my Wedding and Trash the Dress sessions.

The following photographs were taken with the above combination on a walk around the block at home. All images are straight out of camera and not edited apart from resizing for the blog.

The circle of life.

I sold my trusty Canon 30D and Tamron 17-50mm lens today. Well, I promised it to someone waiting on their tax refund but that’s as good as sold to me.

It’s been a great camera and kick started my way into professioanl photography. Unfortunately, I grew into the Nikon system and a recent venture back onto the Canon proved unwieldy.

I know the new owner (from fiveminutephotographer.com) will get a lot of use from the camera and I look forward to seeing some of her results.

Eye in the sky

Encouraged by all the remote cameras used at the recent Olympic games I decided to hang one of my D200s off the lighting rig for the play I am shooting (see previous posts).

Why the good D200 and not my not so good D70? The D200 has an “Interval timer” option. I climbed the ladder, hung the camera next to a light using a gorilla pod, it’s own strap and padlocking the camera to a security chain (not taking any risks) and set it to take a photograph every 90 seconds until the battery depleted.

So, as I was grabbing ground level shots such as this (the director’s favourite)

The remote camera was grabbing pictures like this

InvestHK Event Shoot

Yesterday (Wednesday) morning I was shooting an event for InvestHK. The seminar was for people and companies interested in expanding their business into the Honk Kong province of Foshan. The list of speakers include Dr. Chen, the Mayor of Fushan Province (pictured below), the Director-General of Invest HK as well as several prominent business leaders who have made the move into Foshan and the Pearl River Delta.

The seminar was held at the Langham Hotel on Southbank in Melbourne. A stunning venue, it had the smae issue that most of these venues have … appalling lighting for photography!

The Nikkor 85mm 1.8 lens paid for itself this shoot as I could shoot without a flash distracting the speakers whilst maintaining some kind of professional distance from the subject.

I enjoyed the shoot and even learned a few things as I photographed each of the speakers and gathered some general “atmosphere” images.
